Launch of Chester's Community Toilet Scheme
Chester are one of the first authorities in the North West to launch a ‘Community Toilet Scheme’. Chester’s Town Crier officially proclaimed the launch of the Scheme at the Slug and lettuce, one of the participating businesses. The Community Toilet Scheme aims to provide access to more clean and safe toilets. The scheme is a partnership between Chester City Council and local businesses.
Chester attracts millions of visitors every year and this puts pressure on the public amenities. Old style public conveniences alone can never adequately cope with modern demands and the lack of provision is consistently flagged up by residents and visitors as being an issue which can spoil a visit.
By working with local businesses that have good well maintained facilities, Chester has been able to extend the numbers of toilets available to the public and in particular to increase the awareness of fully accessible toilets and baby change facilities. The public can use the toilet facilities during the premises’ opening hours, without purchase of goods or services.
Businesses already signed up to the Scheme include Burger King, Foregate St, Tesco, Frodsham St, Little Roodee Café, The Groves Bar & Bistro and the Slug & Lettuce, Bridge Street. Each business will display a unique sign so customers can see that they can freely use the facilities
Councillor Pat Lott, Chairman of the Environment Scrutiny Committee said
"I am pleased that Chester businesses have agreed to work in partnership with Chester City Council and Chester City Management so that by working together access to public toilets in Chester can be transformed. This initiative can make a positive impact in the city. Chester City Council will continue its leading role in providing good quality toilets but with this new partnership will provide access to a far greater range of well-maintained toilets at different times of the day.
I would like to thank all those involved in making this scheme a reality in Chester."
By participating in the scheme it is hoped that the businesses also benefit from additional customers who may choose to purchase something. Stephen Wundke, manager of the Groves Bar & Bistro added“I am pleased to be part of the Community Toilet Scheme as I recognise the shortage of good toilet provision particularly in the evenings (or when the Council amenities are closed). By working together with the City Council and Chester City Management I'm sure we can improve the visitor experience that Chester offers!”
